Everything You Need to Know About Printed vs. Woven Fabrics
Printed and woven fabrics are made in different ways, and that changes how they look, feel and perform in an interior. A woven fabric creates its pattern through coloured yarns woven into the cloth. A printed fabric starts with a finished basecloth, then the design is printed onto the surface using screen, rotary or digital print methods.
For upholstery, neither option is automatically better. The right choice depends on the design detail, texture, colour, durability rating, fabric composition and how the furniture will be used. At Saint & Poet, we digitally print our fabrics in the UK because it allows painterly colour, fine linework, layered artwork and expressive pattern to be reproduced with clarity on a durable upholstery basecloth.
Printed vs woven fabric: quick comparison
| Feature | Printed fabric | Woven fabric |
|---|---|---|
| How the design is made | The pattern is printed onto a finished basecloth. | The pattern is created by weaving coloured yarns together. |
| Best for | Detailed artwork, painterly marks, large-scale pattern, colour gradients and expressive prints. | Textural weaves, tonal patterns, simple geometrics and traditional cloth structures. |
| Colour detail | Very strong for complex colour, shading and fine detail. | Limited by yarn colours and weave structure. |
| Texture | Comes mainly from the basecloth, with the artwork printed onto it. | Texture is built into the weave itself. |
| Upholstery suitability | Suitable when printed onto a tested upholstery basecloth with the right rub count and finish. | Suitable when the cloth construction, weight and durability are appropriate for upholstery. |
What is printed upholstery fabric?
Printed upholstery fabric is made by applying a design to a finished fabric base. The basecloth provides the handle, weight, texture and durability, while the print provides the colour and pattern. Digital printing makes it possible to reproduce detailed artwork, subtle colour changes and hand-drawn marks that would be difficult or impossible to create through weaving alone.
This makes printed fabric especially useful for statement chairs, patterned sofas, headboards, footstools, curtains and blinds where the artwork is an important part of the finished interior.
What is woven fabric?
Woven fabric is made by interlacing yarns at right angles. In a woven patterned fabric, the design is created through the yarn colours and weave structure rather than printed on afterwards. Woven fabrics can be beautiful for texture, depth and tonal detail, especially where the desired effect is subtle, traditional or highly tactile.
The limitation is that complex artwork, painterly marks, soft gradients and many-colour designs are harder to achieve in a woven construction.
Why Saint & Poet uses digital print
Saint & Poet fabrics are digitally printed in the UK so each design can keep the movement, colour and detail of the original artwork. This approach gives more freedom to create expressive upholstery fabrics with layered colour, abstract forms, illustrated motifs and painterly surfaces.
Digital print is particularly useful for collections such as Abstract Upholstery Fabric, Kintsu Japanese Inspired Upholstery Fabric, Fresco Upholstery Fabric and Floral Upholstery Fabric, where colour and image detail are central to the design.
Is printed fabric suitable for upholstery?
Yes, printed fabric can be suitable for upholstery when it is printed onto an appropriate upholstery basecloth and tested for durability. The important point is not simply whether a fabric is printed or woven, but whether it has the correct weight, handle, rub count, finish and care requirements for the furniture.
Saint & Poet upholstery fabrics are tested to 35,000+ rubs, making them suitable for demanding residential interiors and many commercial upholstery projects. If durability is your main concern, read our Martindale rub test guide before choosing fabric.
When should you choose printed fabric?
Printed fabric is a strong choice when you want:
- Detailed pattern or artwork.
- Painterly marks, linework or hand-drawn effects.
- Bold colour and expressive interior style.
- A statement chair, headboard, sofa or footstool.
- A design that feels more artistic than conventional.
When might woven fabric be better?
Woven fabric may be a better fit when the main priority is texture rather than image. It can work well for plain weaves, boucles, heavy textures, tonal patterns and traditional cloths where the surface feel is more important than detailed artwork.
For many interiors, the best scheme uses both: a printed statement fabric for visual impact, balanced with quieter woven textures elsewhere in the room.
How to choose between printed and woven fabric
Before choosing, think about the furniture shape, room style, pattern scale and how often the piece will be used. For everyday seating, check the rub count and composition. For large-scale designs, order a sample so you can see the colour, handle and pattern detail in your own light.

Printed vs woven fabric FAQs
Is printed fabric less durable than woven fabric?
Not necessarily. Durability depends on the basecloth, rub count, finish and intended use. A printed fabric on a tested upholstery basecloth can be very suitable for furniture.
Does printed upholstery fabric fade?
All fabrics should be protected from prolonged direct sunlight where possible. Colour fastness depends on the fabric, print process, dye or ink quality and room conditions.
Can printed fabric be used for sofas?
Yes, printed fabric can be used for sofas if it is designed and tested for upholstery. Always check the fabric specification and order a sample before committing to a large project.
Is woven fabric always more expensive?
No. Price depends on fibre content, construction, production method, design complexity, finish and brand. Both printed and woven fabrics can sit at different price points.
Which is better for bold interior design?
Printed fabric is often better for bold, art-led interiors because it can carry detailed pattern, painterly colour and expressive design more freely than woven cloth.
